Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA) Celebrated the 26th Anime Expo with More Concerts and Premiere Events than Ever Before!

Santa Ana, CA – (July 5, 2017) Anime Expo, produced by The Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation (SPJA), presented its 26th event this past weekend at the Los Angeles Convention Center.

This year Anime Expo added its first Pre-Show Night which had 8,068 unique attendance. The regular unique event attendance was 107,658, marking a 7% increase from last year. Overall unique attendance for Anime Expo reached 115,726 including Pre-Show Night, marking a 15% increase of attendance from 2016. Overall turnstile attendance was marked at 357,178 with Pre-Show Night, representing a 17% growth increase from last year.

Anime Expo Brings Japan Subculture to U.S. Fans

[Source: Stephanie Mendez/ABC News] The lobby in the Los Angeles Convention Center was a colorful scene Fourth of July weekend as characters like Zelda, Naruto, Super Mario, and many others came to life through cosplay, an activity that combines costuming and role-playing.

The 2013 Anime Expo celebrated a four-day residency at the LACC and featured the best of Japanese anime, manga, video games, films, shows, and fashion. The event was organized by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation, and according to director of marketing Greg Hignight, over 130,000 people were expected to attend the expo over the entire weekend.

Hignight told ABCNews.com that Anime Expo aims to teach and foster interest in Japanese culture.

“We are a celebration of anime and we are a community that gets together around that, but we are also a platform for anyone who has ever wondered about Japan,” he said.

Cosplayers single-handedly dominated the weekend. Anime Expo guest of honor Alodia Gosiengfiao exhibited different costumes each day of the event. As an internationally known Filipina cosplayer, she takes this activity seriously.

“I really consider myself an artist,” she said. “I see cosplay as an art form. It’s the ultimate art form because instead of painting on a canvas, your body is the canvas.”

Each year, Anime Expo features the biggest event available for both fans and cosplayers: The Masquerade. The Masquerade is a contest that includes creative performances by competing cosplayers. Contestants can enter individually or in groups, and they are judged based on costume craftsmanship and performance.

Kyle Hebert, who recently did the voice of Ryu in Disney’s “Wreck-it Ralph,” cohosted The Masquerade alongside actress Marisha Ray. Hebert told ABCNews.com that he was excited to host the event, even though he had never tried cosplay before.

“You hear the woes of the fans as they take the masks off and they’re drenched in sweat,” he said. “I couldn’t do it, but God bless them.”

Group 30 Leathal Soul won “Best in Show,” which included a $3,000 prize.

According to Hebert, Anime Expo provides community for those who find fulfillment in unconventional things like anime, cosplay or video games.

“Everyone’s passionate about something,” he said. “Everyone’s a geek or a nerd about something. All the folks that tune in and watch sporting events, they’re geeky about sports. [Anime fans] just happen to be geeky about a foreign art form.”

Anime Expo is an annual convention, held in 2011 on July 1-4, at the Los Angeles Convention Center. Anime Expo is currently the largest anime and manga convention in North America.

Popular large events include the Masquerade, Anime Music Video Contest, Concerts, Battle of the Bands, and the "AX Idol" contest. Anime Expo is a 24-hour convention that offers late-night dances, all night video programming, tabletop gaming rooms, and open-mic Karaoke in the late evening/early morning hours. Many of the attendees cosplay while attending the convention, and there are many gatherings for fans of different anime and manga series.

Anime Expo's CEO Michael Lattanzio Steps Down

[Source: AnimeNewsNetwork] The Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation, the parent organization of the Anime Expo convention, has announced on Saturday that its CEO Michael Lattanzio is "leaving on good terms to pursue other projects." SPJA Chairman of the Board Marc Perez has assumed Lattanzio's duties in the interim. Anime Expo is the largest convention devoted to Japanese animation and manga in North America.

SPJA hired Lattanzio as its president and chief executive officer in 2009, and he remained as its head during the Anime Expo 2010 convention this past July. During his tenure, multiple Anime Expo staffers, including the majority of the convention's division managers, resigned in a dispute with Lattanzio and the board. Lattanzio presided when Anime Expo assembled one of its largest guest lineups to date. Anime Expo reported a turnstile attendance of over 105,000 this year, compared to over 109,000 last year. ("Turnstile attendance" is the number of attendees on each day added together, so a person who uses a four-day pass is counted four times.)

Lattanzio is SPJA's third formal CEO since 2005, when then-CEO Jennifer Pon resigned her post. Trulee Karahashi served as SPJA's CEO from 2007 to 2009. On March 27, 2009, Karahashi was dismissed in what she described as a termination. SPJA announced its hiring of Lattanzio on September 8, 2009. Perez was one of several individuals who temporarily headed SPJA during the interim period between Pon and Karahashi's tenures, and again during the interim period between Karahashi and Lattanzio's tenures.
