Live-Action Ghost in the Shell Featurette

GHOST IN THE SHELL
[Source: blastr] The featurette boasts video interviews with director Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman), executive producer Michael Costigan (Prometheus) and Scarlett Johansson, who plays the role of Section 9 leader Major Motoko Kusanagi, aka The Major. What’s more, original Ghost in the Shell anime director Mamoru Oshii — who popped up for a set visit — gives his blessing to the movie, saying Scarlett Johansson’s performance as Motoko has gone “above and beyond” and calling the movie “the most gorgeous film in the series so far.” That’s some pretty high praise right there.

Also starring in Ghost in the Shell is Pilou Asbæk (Game of Thrones) as Motoko Kusanagi’s (The Major) right-hand man Batou, Beat Takeshi Kitano (Zatoichi) as Lt. Col. Daisuke Aramaki, and Michael Pitt (Boardwalk Empire) as the villain of the piece, The Laughing Man. Chin Han, Danusia Samal, Lasarus Ratuere, Yutaka Izumihara and Tuwanda Manyimo round out the cast as members of Section 9, while French star Juliette Binoche plays Dr. Ouelet. Michael Wincott (The Crow, Wesworld) will also appear in an undisclosed role.

GHOST IN THE SHELL
[Source: blastr] Filming is currently underway in Honk Kong for DreamWork’s Ghost in the Shell starring Scarlett Johansson in the role of Major Motoko Kusanagi, and Game of Thrones’ Pilou Asbæk as her trusted right-hand man, Batou.
So far, we’ve only seen the one official pic featuring the Avengers actress as the Section 9 leader but this being the glorious age of social media and the Internet, new pics snapped on the set of the sci-fi movie while filming was taking place have emerged, giving us a closer look at The Major and our very first look at Batou.
As you can see, Batou is sporting his trademark white flattop hairdo and from the look of things, filming was taking place in some kind of marketplace.
The live-action movie is based on the highly popular cyberpunk anime and manga series created by Masamune Shirow in 1989, and is directed by Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) from a screenplay by Jonathan Herman (Straight Outta Compton).

DreamWorks’ upcoming Ghost in the Shell flick has finally found its leading lady. Earlier today, Variety reported that Scarlett Johansson had signed on the dotted line to star in the upcoming big-screen adaptation of the highly popular Japanese anime.

Back in October, it was reported that Johansson had been offered the lead role, but at the time the actress had yet to say yes. Now it looks like it’s finally a done deal. Thanks to her high-profile role as Black Widow in many a Marvel flick and her recent turn as the title character in last year’s Lucy, the actress has proven she can be quite the bankable action star. As for what she'll be up to in Ghost in the Shell, here's your one-line synopsis:
The story follows the exploits of a member of a covert ops unit of the Japanese National Public Safety Commission that specializes in fighting technology-related crime.
Rupert Sanders (Snow White and the Huntsman) will helm the film, which was penned by Bill Wheeler.  Avi Arad and Steven Paul will be producing, with Paramount having the option to come on board as co-producer. DreamWorks and Steven Spielberg, who's been a longtime fan of the original, will oversee production.

Below is a cosplay pic of what we may be seeing in the live-action movie:

Recreating Ghost in the Shell as Live-Action

A respectful homage to Shirow Masamune’s manga and Mamoru Oshii’s seminal film “Ghost in the Shell”, this is a modernized direction that still tries to stays true to the original creator’s vision. What started as a photo tribute directed by Ash Thorp and Tim Tadder (photography), soon became a worldwide collaboration of more than 20 artists from around the world, with each and everyone coming together to help breath life into the project, resulting in the artistic interpretation you see below.

For a film that was a comment on the uber-connected society of the future, Project 2501 ended up being itself an example of how this collaborative group of creatives are so connected ourselves. Many of us never met beyond the communications provided by the vast and infinite net, but still came together to make the ultimate tribute to “Ghost in the Shell”.

Everyone of us wanted the opportunity to pay homage to a ground-breaking film that gave us so much.

We sincerely hope you enjoy our effort to capture the energy and beauty of the original film’s title sequence.
