[Source: MTV] Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, shortened Ilvermorny, was founded by a runaway Irish witch named Isolt Sayre and her No-Maj
husband James Steward, the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
is located at the highest peak of Mount Greylock in Massachusetts.
Initially created as a small magic school for their adoptive children,
Chadwick and Webster Boot, Ilvermorny now ranks among the greatest
magical establishments in the world.
Born into a powerful pure-blood family, Isolt experienced a great
tragedy at the age of 5 when her parents were murdered. She was raised
by her aunt Gormlaith Gaunt, a "fanatical pure-blood" and descendent of
Salazar Slytherin. Gormlaith was so fearful that her niece would
associate with Muggle-borns that she destroyed her Hogwarts letter and
instead homeschooled her. For 12 years, Isolt was subjected to her
aunt's teachings of Dark Magic. Then, at the age of 17, she stole her
aunt's family wand and set off for the New World on the Mayflower in
1620.
Far from home and isolated from magic, Isolt found refuge in
the magical creatures native to North America. She took a particular
liking to a curmudgeonly Pukwudgie named William. According to Rowling,
Pukwudgies are kind of like the America equivalent of goblins. They hunt
with poisonous arrows and "enjoy playing tricks on humans."
During one of their many outings together, William and Isolt
discovered a grisly scene just outside the Plymouth settlement: two dead
wizards and their badly injured young sons. Since it's against a
Pukwudgie's nature to help a human, William refused to help the young
boys. Isolt, however, didn't give up so easily. She nursed them back to
health with the help of a No-Maj named James Steward.
James had befriended the boys and their parents on the ship
to America. Upon their disappearance, he went looking for them. Instead,
he found Isolt. The two eventually fell in love and constructed a small
home for themselves on the top of the Greylock. "Isolt christened her
new home ‘Ilvermorny’ after the cottage in which she had been born, and
which Gormlaith had destroyed," Rowling wrote.
As the boys, Chadwick and Webster, grew older, Isolt promised
them that when they reached 11 years old, she would find them wands and
start a school of magic right there in the small cottage. On Chadwick's
11th birthday, Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was born.
Chadwick insisted that there should be four houses, similar to
Hogwarts, the school Isolt had told him so much about. When it came time
to name them, they each chose their favorite magical beast. "For
Chadwick, an intelligent but often temperamental boy, it was the
Thunderbird that can create storms as it flies. For argumentative but
fiercely loyal Webster, it was the Wampus, a magical panther-like
creature that was fast, strong and almost impossible to kill. For Isolt,
it was, of course, the Horned Serpent that she still visited and with
which she felt a strange sense of kinship," Rowling wrote.
James, a No-Maj, was at a loss. He didn't know much about
magical creatures. However, he quite loved the stories his wife told him
about a curmudgeon named William, so he decided on the Pukwudgie. "Thus
were the four houses of Ilvermorny created, and while the four
originators did not yet know it, much of their own characters leaked
into the houses they had so light-heartedly named," Rowling added.
So, think of the four houses of Ilvermorny like this: Horned
Serpent favors scholars, Wampus is know for its warriors, Pukwudgie is a
house for healers, and Thunderbird speaks to adventurers.
Ilvermorny soon outgrew its humble origins, as news of its existence
began to spread to tribes across the land. In order to accommodate her
students, Isolt began to make wands.
She used Horned Serpent hair to make wands for Chadwick and Webster and
learned to use a variety of cores, including Wampus hair, for her other
students. Isolt, a Parseltongue, always felt a kinship with the Horned
Serpent — and her instincts would prove to be invaluable when
Gormlaith's return threatened to destroy Ilvermorny and her family.
Alas, Gormlaith was no match for the powerful Horned Serpent
wands — or the loyal albeit curmudgeonly William, who shot the wicked
witch with one of his poisonous arrows to protect Isolt, William, and
their children from harm. Since that very day, William and his fellow
Pukwudgies have served as Ilvermorny's private security team,
maintaining the grounds and protecting its students.
As for Isolt and her family, Chadwick authored Chadwick's Charms Vol. I-VII,
which are now required texts at Ilvermorny. He married a Mexican Healer
named Josefina Calderon, and "the Calderon-Boot family remains one of
wizarding America’s most prominent today." (Might we see this surname
pop up in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?)
His brother Webster became an Auror and eventually returned to Europe.
His descendants would go on to be educated at Hogwarts.
Isolt and James's two daughters, Martha and Rionach, had two
very different paths. Martha was a Squib who married a non-magical man
and lived the rest of her days as a No-Maj. Meanwhile, Rionach taught
Defense Against the Dark Arts at Ilvermorny and never married for fear
of carrying on the Slytherin legacy.
Similar to Hogwarts, students of Ilvermorny are required to
wear school robes -- blue and cranberry -- fastened by a gold Gordian
Knot, in memory of Isolt's mother. The students also engage in
inter-house competitions. Unlike Hogwarts, however, wands are
distributed to students after the sorting ceremony. (The wands tend to
choose their owners.) And it's also possible for a student to be chosen
by more than one house. If that happens, the student gets to decide
which house to join.

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald” is the second of five all new adventures in J.K. Rowling’s Wizarding World™. At the end of the first film, the powerful Dark wizard Gellert Grindelwald (Johnny Depp) was captured by MACUSA (Magical Congress of the United States of America), with the help of Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne). But, making good on his threat, Grindelwald escaped custody and has set about gathering followers, most unsuspecting of his true agenda: to raise pure-blood wizards up to rule over all non-magical beings. In an effort to thwart Grindelwald’s plans, Albus Dumbledore (Jude Law) enlists his former student Newt Scamander, who agrees to help, unaware of the dangers that lie ahead. Lines are drawn as love and loyalty are tested, even among the truest friends and family, in an increasingly divided wizarding world.

The Mandalorian is an upcoming American drama web television series,
based on and set in the #StarWars

forthcoming Disney streaming service. The series is set to be written by
Jon Favreau, who will also executive produce alongside Dave Filoni,
Kathleen Kennedy, and Colin Wilson.

Production on the first Star Wars live-action streaming series has
begun! After the stories of Jango and Boba Fett, another warrior emerges
in the Star Wars universe. The Mandalorian is set after the fall of the
Empire and before the emergence of the First Order. We follow the
travails of a lone gunfighter in the outer reaches of the galaxy far
from the authority of the New Republic. The series will be written and
executive produced by Emmy-nominated producer and actor Jon Favreau, as
previously announced, with Dave Filoni (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star
Wars Rebels) directing the first episode. Additional episodic directors
include Deborah Chow (Jessica Jones), Rick Famuyiwa (Dope), Bryce Dallas
Howard (Solemates), and Taika Waititi (Thor: Ragnarok). It will be
executive produced by Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, Kathleen Kennedy, and
Colin Wilson. Karen Gilchrist will serve as co-executive producer.
The idea of a Star Wars live action TV show goes back to at least 2005,
following the premiere of The Revenge of the Sith. It wouldn't be until
Disney grabbed the reins from George Lucas and greatly expanded the
franchise that we'd finally get a Star Wars adventure fit for TV—or at
the very least, a streaming service.
Favreau's production is wholly separate from Lucas's, which would have
been set in the seedy underbelly of Coruscant between the original and
prequel trilogies. Instead, The Mandalorian will take place three years
after Return of the Jedi (originally reported as 7 years but corrected
to 3).
With the fall of the Empire being so recent, the Star Wars galaxy will
likely be a galactic Wild West as a very young New Republic grapples
with its newfound powers. Right now the only piece of current Star Wars
canon that falls within that time frame is the novel Last Shot, which
details the continuing adventures of Han Solo and Lando Calrissian.
But the biggest piece of news we have about the show's plot is its
name—The Mandalorian. Although a well-known piece of lore for devout
Star Wars fans, Mandalorians, and their home planet Mandalore, is a
relatively deep cut in the Star Wars mythos.
In the original and prequel films, the Mandalorians are most memorably
represented by Jango Fett and his clone/son Boba Fett. While not born on
Mandalore, these famous bounty hunters wore Mandalorian armor, which is
why the only official image from the show (very top) feels so very
Fett-ian.
Aside from the Lone Gunman and the particularly Western feel of the
promo image, we're in the dark about other characters who will be in the
show. But we do know who will not be in the show—anyone from previous
Star Wars films. While it's possible considering the timeline that
someone familiar could make an appearance, Favreau stated in an
interview in May that his Star Wars show would feature "all new
characters."
Disney is working hard to get its exclusive streaming service up and
running by fall 2019, and The Mandalorian is set to debut on that
service. Whether it will launch with the service or arrive at a later
date is uncertain.
Long story short, we've still got quite awhile before we see Favreau's
journey into the Star Wars universe, but I have a feeling many more
details will flesh out The Mandalorian while we wait.
[Source: Syfy] A Spotify ad designed to look and feel like a short horror film has been banned in the United Kingdom, thanks to (if that’s the right phrase) the U.K. consumer watchdog group, the Advertising Standards Authority.
The horror-themed ad features a bunch of young, pretty, hip people using Spotify to play the Camila Cabello song “Havana,” which awakens some sort of doll/mannequin/robot from hell, which stalks the hapless music lovers. But of course, after a parent complained that the ad upset their kids, the ASA looked into it and said, absolutely not.
Now, to be fair to the ASA, the ad is pretty freakin’ terrifying — see for yourself:

Netflix’s newest cartoon series, Hilda, based on the Eisner Award-nominated comics written and illustrated by Luke Pearson, premiered on the streaming network in September. My family instantly became obsessed with it.
Not only is it beautiful to look at, but the cartoon adamantly refuses either a wink or a nod at the real world. It is a fully enclosed narrative universe, with its own internal rules and logic. It’s about as pure as children’s television can get and, if I’m being honest, it’s served as a bit of an escape for me as well.
Our family’s first introduction to Hilda came a few years back when it was a feature title on Free Comic Book Day. Since then, my oldest daughter has kept it close to the top of the stack of her free-time reading books. My wife and I have both heard that same story read aloud a dozen times, and it’s little wonder that it resonated so much with an eight-year-old: The bright colors and wild storyline filled with magical creatures stands out in the sea of dumbed-down superhero and science-fiction comic offerings aimed at kids.
Suffice it to say that when Hilda appeared in the new releases column on Netflix, my daughter was ecstatic. Sitting down after school one day and watching the first few episodes with her, I was floored.
Netflix’s Hilda, like the comics, focuses on a young girl living in a modern, pseudo-Scandinavian country. The colors used to illustrate each episode standout; warm, autumnal pastels during the day and deep, rich blues at night. The animation is remarkably unique with joyful, flowing movements emphasized by a sort of syncopated rhythm in the details.
The first few episodes of Netflix’s Hilda are based on the second book in the series by Luke Pearson, Hilda And The Midnight Giant. - Luke Pearson
As it turns out, the valley is bursting with an entire elven civilization. Hilda and her mother find themselves terrorized at night, as invisible elves tear up their house. The young girl embarks on a quest to discover what’s angered the elves, and in the process discovers the ancient history of the giants wandering the mountains all around her.
The two-episode arc is a modern day parable about growing up, leaving the comfortable world that you knew as a child and leaping off into a new environment. It’s an empowering tale, especially for young viewers challenged by new classmates and new expectations as they head back to school.
It seems as if many modern children’s cartoons to take the easy road, retelling the same old stories for audiences that were just born yesterday. Many others, including My Little Pony and the critically-acclaimed reboot of DuckTales, spend just as much time pandering to the adults in the room as they do generating pap for their kids.
Hilda is taking an entirely different approach: reframing the struggles of youth as magical challenges, filled with fantastical creatures and plenty of love and support. It’s wonderful to be able to share that with my oldest child, to watch its metaphors bloom inside her head. I’m excited to see where the show takes her.
Dragon Ball Super lives on with Dragon Ball Super: Broly. The twentieth Dragon Ball film hits theaters in North American in January 2019. Check out our exclusive* first look!
Fox just made a slew of release date changes. Instead of opening Alita: Battle Angelon Dec. 21, she now goes on Feb. 14, 2019. Instead, Fox is releasing, what we hear, is a PG-13 version of Deadpool 2on Dec. 21. They’ve listed it as untitled Deadpool movie.
For Alita, it’s about the date, to have the first movie coming out of Chinese New Year, being day and date. The movie is in tip-top VFX shape and its delay has nothing to do with post-production. This leaves the Dec. 21 play period with Deadpool 2, Warners’ Aquaman, Paramount’s Bumblee, Sony’s Holmes and Watson, and Universal’s Welcome to Marwen.
Also, the next X-Men Dark Phoenixwon’t open on Feb. 14 anymore, rather next summer in the June 7 slot. The trailer launched this week earning close to 8M YouTube views on Fox’s channel. Summer is not only a better date, but again, it gives the film a better shot to have a bigger opening in China. Why? The trailer clocked 44 million views in first 24 hrs of release online this week out of China. Also, premium screens previously reserved for Gambit will be in play and provide an even bigger upside for the film. Dark Phoenix will be up against Illumination/Uni’s The Secret Life of Pets 2 and Lionsgate’s comedy Flarsky on that date.
Also Gambit moves out of next summer on June 7 to March 13, 2020. The pic is still in development with no director yet and Channing Tatum still attached. Reid Carolin and Joshua Zetumer were working on the script. Right now it’s the only studio tentpole on that date.
In regards to Deadpool 2, is there new footage? Fox staying mum, but Reynolds tweeted this out:
In 2013, film director and animator Hayao Miyazaki suddenly announced his retirement at the age of 72. But he couldn't shake his burning desire to create. After an encounter with young CGI animators, Miyazaki embarked on a new endeavor, his first project ever to utilize CGI. But the artist, who had been adamant about hand-drawn animation, confronted many challenges. The film even faces the danger of being cancelled. Can an old master who thinks he's past his prime shine once again? This program goes behind the scenes over two years as Miyazaki overcomes struggles to create his short film using CGI.
Jean Grey begins to develop incredible powers that corrupt and turn her into a Dark Phoenix. Now the X-Men will have to decide if the life of a team member is worth more than all the people living in the world.
