Actor who played Hagrid Dies at 72

Anthony Robert McMillan, known professionally as Robbie Coltrane, was a Scottish actor and comedian. He gained worldwide recognition as Rubeus Hagrid in the Harry Potter film series (2001–2011), and as Valentin Dmitrovich Zukovsky in the James Bond films GoldenEye (1995) and The World Is Not Enough (1999). He was appointed an OBE in the 2006 New Year Honours by Queen Elizabeth II for his services to drama. In 1990, Coltrane received the Evening Standard British Film Award – Peter Sellers Award for Comedy. In 2011, he was honoured for his "outstanding contribution" to film at the British Academy Scotland Awards.

Coltrane started his career appearing alongside Hugh Laurie, Stephen Fry, and Emma Thompson in the sketch series Alfresco (1983–1984). In 1987, he starred in the BBC miniseries Tutti Frutti alongside Thompson, for which he received his first British Academy Television Award for Best Actor nomination. Coltrane then gained national prominence starring as criminal psychologist Dr. Eddie "Fitz" Fitzgerald in the ITV television series Cracker (1993–2006), a role which saw him receive the British Academy Television Award for Best Actor in three consecutive years (1994 to 1996). In 2006, Coltrane came eleventh in ITV's poll of TV's 50 Greatest Stars, voted by the public. In 2016 he starred in the four-part Channel 4 series National Treasure alongside Julie Walters, a role for which he received a British Academy Television Award nomination.

Coltrane appeared in two films for George Harrison's Handmade Films: the Neil Jordan neo-noir Mona Lisa (1986) with Bob Hoskins, and Nuns on the Run with Eric Idle. He also appeared in Kenneth Branagh's Shakespeare adaptation Henry V (1989), the comedy Let It Ride (1989), Roald Dahl's Danny, the Champion of the World (1989), Steven Soderbergh's crime-comedy thriller Ocean's Twelve (2004), Rian Johnson's caper film The Brothers Bloom (2008), Mike Newell's Dickens film adaptation Great Expectations (2012), and Emma Thompson's biographical film Effie Gray (2014). He was also known for his voice performances in the animated films The Tale of Despereaux (2008), and Pixar's Brave (2012).

The Story of Ilvermorny

The Secret History of Ilvermorny

Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, shortened Ilvermorny, is an American school of magic, which serves as the school for the North American continent. It first appeared in a short story by J. K. Rowling on Pottermore on June 28, 2016, and its first onscreen mention was in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. The school was founded in the seventeenth century in Adams, Massachusetts, on Mount Greylock, the highest natural point in the state. It is concealed from the non-magic world by enchantments which may sometimes appear as a cloud surrounding the peak. Modeled after Hogwarts, the school has four Houses into which the students are sorted upon arrival.

Ilvermorny was founded by Isolt Sayre after she traveled from Ireland via England to North America on the Mayflower in 1620 and named after the cottage in which she had been born. She had not had the opportunity to attend Hogwarts during her childhood, and partially modeled Ilvermorny after what she had heard of Hogwarts, as well as her own imagination. Her first students were her own adopted children, Chadwick and Webster Boot.  

Ilvermorny is divided into four houses: Thunderbird, Horned Serpent, Pukwudgie, and Wampus, each said to represent a different part of the ideal wizard. The names were chosen by Isolt Sayre and her family after their favourite magical creatures. Chadwick being "intelligent but also temperamental" chose the Thunderbird, his brother Webster "argumentative and fiercely loyal" chose the Wampus. Isolt herself was a Parselmouth and chose the Horned Serpent, and her No-Maj (Muggle or non-magical) husband James Steward picked the Pukwudgie, since Isolt's stories about one made him laugh. Ilvermorny has no house colours, but every student wears blue and cranberry robes, fastened by a gold Gordian Knot.

The Sorting process is also different to that of Hogwarts. While the rest of the school watches from the circular balcony overhead, new students file into the round entrance hall. They stand around the walls and, one by one, are called to stand on the symbol of the Gordian Knot set into the middle of the stone floor. In silence the school then waits for the enchanted carvings to react. If the Horned Serpent wants the student, the crystal set into its forehead will light up. If the Wampus wants the student, it roars. The Thunderbird signifies its approval by beating its wings, and the Pukwudgie will raise its arrow into the air. Unlike Hogwarts, more than one Ilvermorny house can claim a student; when two or more carvings react, the student is entitled to choose their house.

[Source: MTV] Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, shortened Ilvermorny, was founded by a runaway Irish witch named Isolt Sayre and her No-Maj husband James Steward, the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is located at the highest peak of Mount Greylock in Massachusetts. Initially created as a small magic school for their adoptive children, Chadwick and Webster Boot, Ilvermorny now ranks among the greatest magical establishments in the world.

Born into a powerful pure-blood family, Isolt experienced a great tragedy at the age of 5 when her parents were murdered. She was raised by her aunt Gormlaith Gaunt, a "fanatical pure-blood" and descendent of Salazar Slytherin. Gormlaith was so fearful that her niece would associate with Muggle-borns that she destroyed her Hogwarts letter and instead homeschooled her. For 12 years, Isolt was subjected to her aunt's teachings of Dark Magic. Then, at the age of 17, she stole her aunt's family wand and set off for the New World on the Mayflower in 1620. 

Far from home and isolated from magic, Isolt found refuge in the magical creatures native to North America. She took a particular liking to a curmudgeonly Pukwudgie named William. According to Rowling, Pukwudgies are kind of like the America equivalent of goblins. They hunt with poisonous arrows and "enjoy playing tricks on humans."

During one of their many outings together, William and Isolt discovered a grisly scene just outside the Plymouth settlement: two dead wizards and their badly injured young sons. Since it's against a Pukwudgie's nature to help a human, William refused to help the young boys. Isolt, however, didn't give up so easily. She nursed them back to health with the help of a No-Maj named James Steward.

James had befriended the boys and their parents on the ship to America. Upon their disappearance, he went looking for them. Instead, he found Isolt. The two eventually fell in love and constructed a small home for themselves on the top of the Greylock. "Isolt christened her new home ‘Ilvermorny’ after the cottage in which she had been born, and which Gormlaith had destroyed," Rowling wrote.

As the boys, Chadwick and Webster, grew older, Isolt promised them that when they reached 11 years old, she would find them wands and start a school of magic right there in the small cottage. On Chadwick's 11th birthday, Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry was born. 

Chadwick insisted that there should be four houses, similar to Hogwarts, the school Isolt had told him so much about. When it came time to name them, they each chose their favorite magical beast. "For Chadwick, an intelligent but often temperamental boy, it was the Thunderbird that can create storms as it flies. For argumentative but fiercely loyal Webster, it was the Wampus, a magical panther-like creature that was fast, strong and almost impossible to kill. For Isolt, it was, of course, the Horned Serpent that she still visited and with which she felt a strange sense of kinship," Rowling wrote.

James, a No-Maj, was at a loss. He didn't know much about magical creatures. However, he quite loved the stories his wife told him about a curmudgeon named William, so he decided on the Pukwudgie. "Thus were the four houses of Ilvermorny created, and while the four originators did not yet know it, much of their own characters leaked into the houses they had so light-heartedly named," Rowling added.

So, think of the four houses of Ilvermorny like this: Horned Serpent favors scholars, Wampus is know for its warriors, Pukwudgie is a house for healers, and Thunderbird speaks to adventurers.

Ilvermorny soon outgrew its humble origins, as news of its existence began to spread to tribes across the land. In order to accommodate her students, Isolt began to make wands. She used Horned Serpent hair to make wands for Chadwick and Webster and learned to use a variety of cores, including Wampus hair, for her other students. Isolt, a Parseltongue, always felt a kinship with the Horned Serpent — and her instincts would prove to be invaluable when Gormlaith's return threatened to destroy Ilvermorny and her family.

Alas, Gormlaith was no match for the powerful Horned Serpent wands — or the loyal albeit curmudgeonly William, who shot the wicked witch with one of his poisonous arrows to protect Isolt, William, and their children from harm. Since that very day, William and his fellow Pukwudgies have served as Ilvermorny's private security team, maintaining the grounds and protecting its students.

As for Isolt and her family, Chadwick authored Chadwick's Charms Vol. I-VII, which are now required texts at Ilvermorny. He married a Mexican Healer named Josefina Calderon, and "the Calderon-Boot family remains one of wizarding America’s most prominent today." (Might we see this surname pop up in Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them?) His brother Webster became an Auror and eventually returned to Europe. His descendants would go on to be educated at Hogwarts.

Isolt and James's two daughters, Martha and Rionach, had two very different paths. Martha was a Squib who married a non-magical man and lived the rest of her days as a No-Maj. Meanwhile, Rionach taught Defense Against the Dark Arts at Ilvermorny and never married for fear of carrying on the Slytherin legacy.

Similar to Hogwarts, students of Ilvermorny are required to wear school robes -- blue and cranberry -- fastened by a gold Gordian Knot, in memory of Isolt's mother. The students also engage in inter-house competitions. Unlike Hogwarts, however, wands are distributed to students after the sorting ceremony. (The wands tend to choose their owners.) And it's also possible for a student to be chosen by more than one house. If that happens, the student gets to decide which house to join.

Rowling has released a short story revealing the origins of the Ilvermorny School of Witchcraft and Wizardry featured in the Harry Potter movie prequel Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, set in the Roaring '20s, decades before the story of the Boy Who Lived.

The new tale is also accompanied by a quiz that will sort out Harry Potter fans into the school’s houses (Horned Serpent, Pukwudgie, Tunderbird and Wampus -- such fun!) and by this gorgeous animated trailer that tells the tale of Ilvermorny’s founding by a young Irish woman named Isolt Sayre back in the 17th century.

Following the death of her parents, and after much suffering at the hands of her evil aunt, Isolt stole her magic wand and fled to the New World aboard the Mayflower disguised as a Muggle boy named Elias Story. While there, she discovers a whole new magical world and fantastical creatures.

A New Harry Potter Fan Film

Severus Snape and the Marauders

Rowling to write a series of books about the Marauders (aka Harry's father, James Potter, and his best friends from Hogwarts, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew). While Rowling has, sadly, shot down ideas about a Marauders prequel in the past, that doesn't mean that fans can't take things into their own hands! Enter: Severus Snape and the Marauders, a high-budget Harry Potter fan film, paid for and created entirely by diehard Potterheads. 

The 25-minute film centers on Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot, Prongs, and the Half-Blood Prince as they bid Hogwarts goodbye and enter the real wizarding world — and trust us, if you're a fan, you need to set aside time to watch the entire thing. The casting of Severus Snape, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew is particularly excellent, and the fan film is so high quality that you'll feel as if you're watching a brand-new Harry Potter movie.

Set in 1978, Severus Snape, James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, and Lily Evans have just graduated from Hogwarts School. JK Rowling Reveals More Wizarding Schools

HARRY POTTER UNIVERSE EXPANDS

[Source: ew.com] J.K. Rowling revealed the existence of an American school of witchcraft and wizardry in the world of Harry Potter, but that’s just the tip of the iceberg. The author and screenwriter of Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them says there are 11 “prestigious” magic schools, including Hogwarts, and she’s named a few. 

According to a series of posts on Pottermore, Rowling stated that “the wizarding populations of most countries choose the option of home schooling. Occasionally, too, the magical community in a given country is tiny or far-flung and correspondence courses have been found a more cost-effective means of educating the young.”

Therefore, there are merely the 11 schools registered with the International Confederation of Wizards, though there are more smaller institutions. One, of course, is Hogwarts, Harry’s home away from home, but what about the other magic folk around the world? For more information on each, click on the links below, but here are the ones revealed so far. 

Mahoutokoro: located in Japan on the topmost point of the volcanic island of Minami Iwo Jima, this palace is made of mutton-fat jade. Students are accepted at the age of 7, though at this time they are considered day students and are ferried between school and home on the backs of giant storm petrels. They board by 11, at which time they receive enchanted robes that grow as the students do and change color based on their learning progression. The school is also known for their Quidditch. 

Uagadou: The largest wizarding school in the world is located in Africa at an unspecified location called “Mountains of the Moon,” the structure of which is described as being carved out of the side of a mountain and shrouded in mist. Students are adept at astronomy, alchemy, self-transfiguration, and casting spells by pointing their fingers and various hand gestures, since Rowling states the wand is a European invention. In lieu of letters by owl, accepted students receive Dream Messengers in their sleep from the current headmaster/mistress. 

Castelobruxo: The golden temple-like school is located in the Brazilian rainforest and looks, to the untrained Muggle eye, as ruins. Small and mischievous spirit beings known as Caiporo protect the grounds and the residing students, who wear green robes and are skilled in herbology and magizoology. 

Beauxbatons Academy of Magic: You know this institution from Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire as one of the three schools competing in the Triwizard Tournament. The school is “thought to be located in the Pyrenees” mountain range in Europe, and the grounds consist of a chateau with surrounding gardens and lawns. 

Durmstrang Institute: Durmstrang is the other foreign school that came to Hogwarts for the Triwizard Tournament in Goblet of Fire. Nobody is 100 percent certain of its location as it’s the most secretive of the 11 institutions, though it’s believed to reside far north in Europe. Durmstrang’s reputation is tainted by some nefarious wizards who headed the school throughout history. 

Ilvermorny: A detailed account of this school isn’t available at this time, but based on the map revealed on Pottermore it’s the American school of witchcraft and wizardry located on the East Coast. Rowling previously revealed that, though it’s not in New York, “indigenous magic was important in the founding of the school. If I say which tribes, location is revealed.”
