[Source: AnimeNewsNetwork] Disney is introducing its latest animated film, Big Hero 6, in Japan with a video animated by Tekken, a comedian famous for emotional flip-book-style anime shorts. The short features the song "Story" by popular singer AI.
The adventure story revolves around Hiro, a 14-year-old boy who lost his dear brother Tadashi in a mysterious accident, and Baymax, a personal healthcare companion robot developed by Tadashi. The story is set in San Fransokyo, a fictional city that combines the imagery of San Francisco and Tokyo.
Inspired by the film, Tekken created this promotional video about the bond between the two brothers, and the literal and figurative healing Baymax gives Hiro.
The movie's producer Roy Conli said that he loves Tekken's flip-book animation. Conli discussed working with Tekken several times, and he lauded the final work as truly marvelous. Big Hero 6's directors Don Hall and Chris Williams said they were quite taken by the short, and called it very "cute and kawaii."
Big Hero 6 opened in North America on November 7, and it will open in Japan on December 20. Artist Haruki Ueno (Phi-Brain: Saigo no Puzzle, EXILE Monogatari) launched a manga adaptation in Kodansha's Magazine Special in August, and Yen Press will publish the manga in North America. (The film itself is loosely inspired by Marvel's comics of the same name, and Hall and Williams have openly cited anime and manga as major influences on their movie.)
Tekken gained famed with Pendulum, a manga "flip book" animation with over 1,620 images he drew by hand. The short depicts the story of a married couple through the years. The animation attracted over 3 million views on YouTube since its initial in release on a Japanese variety show in 2012.
After watching the video that same year, British rock group MUSE used Pendulum as the official music video for their song "Exogenesis: Symphony Part 3 (Redemption). Panelist at the 42nd Japan Cartoonist Awards held by the Japan Cartoonists Association of Manga Creators honored Tekken for last May for Pendulum, lauding the short as "a work that shows us the new potential of manga." The short is now inspiring a live-action film with Manami Konishi (Steamboy), Itsuji Itao (Cromartie High: The Movie), and Naoko Ken (Mirai Shōnen Conan Tokubetsu Hen-Kyodaiki Gigant no Fukkatsu).
Actor Billy Boyd, who plays ‘Pippin’ in Peter Jackson’s on-screen Tolkienverse, will perform the closing song for the upcoming THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES.
A sample of that tune was recently issued, and can be heard via the embed below. Boyd co-wrote the song with longtime Jackson collaborators (LOTR/HOBBIT scripters/producers) Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens.
THE HOBBIT: THE BATTLE OF THE FIVE ARMIES will release December 17; its score will release a few days earlier.
[Source: LA Times – Patrick Kevin Day] For many fans, J.J. Abrams’ “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” looms on the 2015 release date calendar like a most eagerly anticipated holiday gift that can’t be unwrapped quickly enough.
Organizers of Star Wars Celebration, the traveling confab that celebrates all things connected to George Lucas’ galaxy far, far away, are hoping to capitalize on that enthusiasm, looking to build attendance for the 2015 gathering, which rolls into the Anaheim Convention Center April 16-19. (Hero Complex readers can get an exclusive first look at the poster for the 2015 event above.)
“It’s going to be really interesting, because we are way ahead with ticket sales from where we usually are this far out,” said Mary Franklin, senior events and fan relations lead for Lucasfilm. “I feel safe saying this is going to be the biggest one yet.”
The Celebrations date back to the release of the first prequel in the “Star Wars” saga — 1999′s “Star Wars: Episode I — The Phantom Menace.” The first convention took place in Denver just weeks before “Episode I” opened; subsequent events took place in Indianapolis, Ind.; Orlando, Fla.; and overseas, in Japan, England and Germany.
Franklin believes attendance for the 2015 gathering in Anaheim could top the record set in 2007 (the last time the Celebration took place in Southern California), when roughly 35,000 individual ticket holders turned out for the event.
While the upcoming Celebration will be the first to be held in the U.S. since Disney acquired Lucasfilm in 2012, little has changed in terms of planning the show, according to Franklin.
“The Celebration recipe is really built so much on fan passion and what the fans bring to the show,” Franklin said. “It’s really the same fan festival, just bigger.”
Programming will include interactive events — such as diorama building, Jedi training and “Star Wars” tattooing. A new session of “Star Wars University,” a classroom style presentation that in the past has featured a lesson in storyboarding with “Star Wars Rebels” executive producer Dave Filoni, also is set to take place.
As for major announcements about — or possibly early footage from — “The Force Awakens,” no details have yet been confirmed.
“We’ve got so many things coming from ‘Star Wars,’ I know it’ll be a very exciting show, I’ll say that much,” Franklin said.
It’s the end of an era, folks. Just shy of 20 years, it seems that The Anime Web Turnpike has finally closed it’s doors, meaning the site (and the mirror of the “classic” site they kept up purely for nostalgia’s sake) is now offline.
For those of you who might be too young to remember, Anipike was THE website for anime fans back in the day. Before Google & Wikipedia, Jay Fubler Harvey started Anipike as a simple link directory for all the anime & manga related websites he could find—and it quickly grew to the place anime fans would go to to find fansites, image galleries, and news. You can read about Anipike’s timeline up until 2006, when the site tried to undergo a makeover under new ownership, here.
Did you know Lucasfilm has made an animated musical fairy tale called STRANGE MAGIC that hits theaters this January?
Strange Magic is a Lucasfilm Ltd. production set to be released by Touchstone Pictures on January 23, 2015.
Here's the official plot synopsis: "Strange Magic is a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by A Midsummer Night's Dream. Popular songs from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion. Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and Industrial Light & Magic, which created the CGI animation for 2011’s Academy Award®-winning film Rango, bring to life the fanciful forest turned upside down with world-class animation and visual effects."
One
kingdom that is home to “fairies, elves, imps and all sorts of
creatures,” and then a dark forest, which houses “scary goblins and
other nasty creatures.” The residents never venture out of their
respective worlds…until forbidden love potions, made from flowers that
grow along the border, are let loose. At that point, “all heck breaks
loose,” Rydstrom says, especially when the two main characters (voiced
by Alan Cumming and Evan Rachel Wood) meet. The director says Lucas
often emphasized that the story should be about “finding beauty in
strange places.”
George Lucas executive produced and wrote the story upon which the film is based. Strange Magic is directed by Gary Rydstrom (Toy Story Toons: Hawaiian Vacation), produced by Mark S. Miller (associate producer Mars Attacks!), with a screenplay by David Berenbaum (Elf), Irene Mecchi (Brave, The Lion King) and Rydstrom.
The voice cast includes Alan Cumming (X2: X-Men United), Evan Rachel Wood (True Blood), Kristin Chenoweth (Glee), Maya Rudolph (Bridesmaids), Sam Palladio (Nashville), newcomer Meredith Anne Bull, Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2), Elijah Kelley (The Butler), Bob Einstein (Curb Your Enthusiasm) and Peter Stormare (22 Jump Street). Marius de Vries (Moulin Rouge) serves as both the musical director and composer.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced that twenty animated feature films have been submitted to be considered as award nominees for the 2014 Oscars. Provided that at least sixteen of the submissions ultimately have a mandatory qualifying run in Los Angeles and follow the Academy’s other rules for eligibility, there will again be five nominations for the Oscar award for Best Animated Feature.
Nominations for the 87th Academy Awards will be announced on January 15, 2015 at 8:30 AM Eastern Time. The award ceremony will be held and broadcast live by ABC on February 22, 2015, with Neil Patrick Harris hosting.
The films submitted for Oscar consideration follow in the alphabetical order given by the Academy:
Big Hero 6 (Walt Disney Animation Studios). Directed by Don Hall and Chris Williams
The Book of Life (Reel FX Creative Studios). Directed by Jorge Gutierrez
The Boxtrolls (Laika Animation). Directed by Graham Annable and Anthony Stacchi
Cheatin’ (Bill Plympton Studios). Created and directed by Bill Plympton
Blizzcon 2014 took place over the weekend in Anaheim, California. Here are some of the best ones we've found on the net. Some of these cosplayers look like they just leapt out of World of Warcraft, Diablo and Starcraft to invade the convention center. Enjoy!
The Suicide Squad (created by John Ostrander and Ryan Scott) is an antihero team of incarcerated supervillains who act as deniable assets for the United States government, undertaking high-risk black ops missions in exchange for commuted prison sentences. The group operates out of Belle Reve Penitentiary, under the directorship of Dr. Amanda Waller.
Thus, the Suicide Squad's existence helps to explain why many convicted
villains in the D.C. Universe roam free without having heroes tracking
them down—until they, inevitably, attempt or commit another crime.
David Ayer's SUICIDE SQUAD will feature the latest incarnation of The Joker. Jared Leto is in talks for a role in Ayer's adapatation, and the prevailing wisdom is that the role he's up for is that of Batman's nefarious archnemesis.
Isn't it interesting that Ledger won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for THE DARK KNIGHT, and now a newly-minted Best Supporting Actor winner is up for the role? Funny how things work out these days...
Word has it that Margot Robbie (THE WOLF OF WALL STREET, ABOUT TIME) has been cast to play Joker sidekick/girlfriend/henchperson Harley Quinn in the picture.
The film is currently targeting an August 2016 release and should be ramping up pretty quickly.
In a time of global crisis, an international task force of heroes banded together to restore peace to a war-torn world. This organization, known as Overwatch, ended the crisis and helped maintain peace for a generation, inspiring an era of exploration, innovation, and discovery. After many years, Overwatch's influence waned and it was eventually disbanded. Now in the wake of its dismantling, conflict is rising once again. Overwatch may be gone…but the world still needs heroes.
Overwatch is a highly stylized team-based shooter set on earth in the near future. Every match is an intense multiplayer showdown pitting a diverse cast of soldiers, mercenaries, scientists, adventurers, and oddities against each other in an epic, globe-spanning conflict.
When she came to life in 1974, she was a kitty without a name, sitting sideways in blue overalls and a big red bow, on a coin purse for Japanese girls. On Saturday, fans around the world celebrate the 40th anniversary of this global icon of "cute-cool." That is, Hello Kitty.
Only a handful of characters last so long, especially in Japan, where thousands come and go in a highly competitive market. Hello Kitty has the looks, and more.
"Characters must have certain qualities, like an oversized round face, short limbs and plump body," said economist Takuro Morinaga, an expert on popular culture. "Kitty follows the basics, yet she has a strong personality."
Innovative design and clever marketing also helped expand her fan base around the world, said Christine Yano, anthropologist and author of "Pink Globalization: Hello Kitty's Trek Across the Pacific."
Hello Kitty's company, Sanrio Co., which specializes in designing and making a wide range of products in the booming "cute" business, created her as a character 40 years ago.
According to Sanrio, her real name is Kitty White, born Nov. 1 — no year is given — in the London suburbs. The birthday date was chosen because it is the birthday of her original designer, Yuko Shimizu.
Sanrio strives to keep Hello Kitty ahead of the curve, factoring in social and fashion trends and collaborating with other popular characters and fashion brands. Her basic appearance hasn't changed much, but just about everything else constantly is. Yano said the philosophy of not resting is part of the character's success.

"That makes things very fresh, very new," she said in a telephone interview from Boston. "She is always the same but always different."
___
THE 70s: A SCHOOLGIRL STAPLE
Made up of just a few simple strokes — two dots for eyes, a tiny circle for a nose and no mouth — Hello Kitty was largely for little girls at the start. Her stationery became a staple gift for schoolgirls. Hello Kitty made her overseas debut in the United States in 1976 before heading to Europe and the rest of Asia. She posed piloting an airplane in 1978 for the opening of Tokyo's Narita International Airport, symbolizing her dream of going global.
___
THE 80s: KIDS STUFF NO MORE
Hello Kitty began shaking off her purely childish image and attracting adults. Her outfits and background shifted from bold red, blue and yellow to hues of pink and blue. A black and white Hello Kitty reflected a monotone boom led by Japanese fashion brand Comme des Garcons. Kitty's third and current designer Yuko Yamaguchi took the bold step of removing the black outline around the character. Hello Kitty decorated the popular items of the day, including pagers and hand-held game machines.
___
THE 90s: LIKE MOTHER, LIKE DAUGHTER
Some of her original fans started having children, a potential second generation of fans. Sanrio Puroland, a theme park targeting families, opened in the Tokyo suburbs. Designer Yamaguchi created a baby Kitty in 1999 at the request of young mothers. "Kitty-lers," a new breed of grown-ups devoted to the character, became a national phenomenon. A Hello Kitty laptop went on sale, as did a portable karaoke machine amid a karaoke boom. "I'm her peer, and I've been her fan since kindergarten," said 40-year-old Yuko Ishikawa, who gave a big hug Thursday to Hello Kitty at Sanrio Puroland on a visit with her 3-year-old daughter, Hina. "Happy birthday!"
___
THE 2000s: THE COOL FACTOR
The growing worldwide popularity of Japanese animation and comics helped Hello Kitty become cool, not just cute — or "cute-cool" as Yano puts it. A new wink gave her greater semantic presence, she said. "It can be taken straight, or ironically, or it can be taken humorously." Sanrio reached out to fans of different fashion tastes, from girly to street and designer brands. In 2008 Hello Kitty donned a Dior collection in Vogue magazine. She also co-branded with Diesel, A Bathing Ape, Undercover, Reebok and Vans, as well as cosmetics makers Crabtree and Evelyn and MAC.
___
THE FUTURE: LADY GAGA, SWAROVSKI, WHAT'S NEXT?
Hello Kitty is featured on about 50,000 items in some 130 countries. Lady Gaga has performed in Hello Kitty costumes, and rock band Kiss produced T-shirts last year featuring Hello Kitty in its trademark-Kiss makeup and costumes. A sitting Kitty decorated with 14,000 Swarovski stones sells for 476,280 yen ($470) in Japan. Taiwan's EVA Air launched a Kitty-inspired Airbus A330-300 flight between Taipei and Sapporo in 2011, and Kitty-themed luxury spas have opened in Bangkok and Dubai.
Her future? There will be some ups and downs ahead, Yano says, but "I think it has a presence, a long-lasting presence."
Disney’s plan to fully capitalize on the Marvel license is in full swing, and the new kid-focused superhero team Big Hero 6 opens this weekend. Want a peek at the company’s newest, youngest heroes?
No, you won’t find Iron Man or Thor helping save San Fransokyo, but Baymax, Hiro and the gang look more than up to the task of taking on their own rogues gallery. We were a little iffy on this one when it entered development, since it was based on such a little-known series, but the more footage we see, the more excited we are to find out what the folks behind Wreck-It Ralph and Frozen can do with the superhero genre.
With the film opening wide this Friday, the studio has released a ton of new footage introducing the rest of the team and showing off some behind-the-scenes stuff for how they put it all together. It looks like a quirky, cuddly version of Avengers Lite.
Every child comes into the world full of promise, and none more so than Chappie: he is gifted, special, a prodigy. Like any child, Chappie will come under the influence of his surroundings - some good, some bad - and he will rely on his heart and soul to find his way in the world and become his own man. But there's one thing that makes Chappie different from anyone else: he is a robot. The first robot with the ability to think and feel for himself. His life, his story, will change the way the world looks at robots and humans forever.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, filming for Star Wars Episode VII officially wrapped today — though Entertainment Weekly notes minor shooting will continue for at least a few more days. Regardless of when filming actually ends, you know there are several (and several more) months of post-production and effects work still to come.
We still have more than a year to wait until we get to see it, but director J.J. Abrams has wrapped filming on Star Wars: Episode VII — and we have this note right here to prove it.
Abrams, Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy and producer Bryan Burk gave out a hand-signed note to the cast and crew once filming wrapped to commemorate the accomplishment (along with a commemorative "VII" ball cap that you can almost guarantee will be selling for $1,000s on eBay soon).
Check out the full note above, and a choice excerpt below:
"We are here to make a film that entertains millions of people, of all ages, for generations. To create an experience people will cherish watching as much as we will cherish having made it, together.”
Along with the note, some pics and footage from an apparent wrap party have also made their way online thanks to co-star John Boyega's Instagram. One shot has him hanging with R2-D2, and the videos look like your typical wrap-party shenanigans.
Star Wars: Episode VII is set to open December 18, 2015.
This is one of the most amazing music videos ever.
Rock group OK Go have been dazzling us with their super-creative videos for years. Their latest, for the single "I Won't Let You Down," continues that trend by featuring a cast of hundreds, Honda UNI-CUB personal transport devices and a lot of Japanese school girls holding brightly-colored umbrellas.
The European Space Agency’s Rosetta mission, which plans to be the first-ever man-made device to land on a comet.
Here’s the full synopsis:
The short film tells the story of one of the most important space exploration endeavors of this decade. Just as Gillen's enigmatic Master encourages Franciosi's Apprentice to seek out the key to life amidst a rugged alien landscape, ESA has been on a decade-long ambitious journey of its own, to unlock the mysteries of a comet and the origins of our Solar System with its Rosetta spacecraft, hundreds of millions of kilometers from Earth.
AMBITION complements the ongoing communication about Rosetta and adds a "human dimension" to the scientific and technological achievements of the mission, which include curiosity, drive and ambition.
The European Space Agency has certainly taken an extremely unique approach toward generating some buzz for Rosetta, and it’s a nice reminder of the excitement that still exists around space exploration. We’re still a long way from the huge goal of landing humans on Mars, but this is one very cool project that is happening right under our noses.
So, while we wait to see what happens next with Rosetta, enjoy the stunningly cool short film below:
