"Wonder Woman" Dropped by NBC

[Source: iVillage.com] If you're old enough to remember the original Wonder Woman TV series (click here to wax nostalgic about its cheesy opening), then this news may be bittersweet: Entertainment Weekly has learned that NBC has ditched its plans to air a much-ballyhooed modern-day Wonder Woman reboot. 

 

When NBC commissioned the pricey project from writer/producer David E. Kelley and Warner Bros. TV, it seemed like a sure thing. The original series, featuring Lynda Carter's beloved superheroine, was a huge hit that inspired thousands of Halloween costumes in the '70s. Many of the kids who wore those costumes are now adults with kids of their own -- giving the show a built-in audience. And the actress chosen to star, Friday Night Lights' Adrianne Palicki, was already well liked by both critics and TV viewers.  

 

So why pass on such a well-publicized, big-budget pilot with brand recognition? Though NBC declined to offer a reason, mixed reviews at network screenings obviously quashed high hopes for the project. And when the network released photos of Palicki in costume, there was a fan outcry: The outfit didn't hit the cheesy-cool fashion sweet spot that Carter's super-duds had managed to achieve. 

 

The show's limbo status (it could still get picked up by another network, like the CW) is bitter, but some may think it's sweet. Fans of the original WW may not want their memories spoiled. The high boots and the starry, protective wrist cuffs can remain where they belong: on Carter's buxom bod, in viewers' memories. 

 

Another plus: Since NBC lost money by dropping the Wonder Woman pilot, the network must be serious about demanding a higher standard of quality. That bodes well for some of the other shows that did get picked up. According to TV Line, the Peacock is sticking by some of its high-quality, though not necessarily high-rated scripted series, such as Harry's Law, Parenthood and Chuck -- which are returning for second, third and fifth seasons, respectively. For Chuck, which has barely dodged cancellation on numerous occasions, the fifth season will be its last.

Over 60 anime, manga, game, and voice-acting companies are banding together to hold a "Smile Heart" charity event in Tokyo on Sunday to raise funds for the Great Eastern Japan Earthquake (Higashi Nihon Daishinsai) disaster. The free event will take place at Sunshine City's World Import Mart event center in the Ikebukuro district from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Among other items, the event will have bidding auctions, raffle drawings, charity good sales, and donation drive corners, and stage performances. In addition to signed items from many staff and cast members, the auctions will include sketches, signatures, and manga panels from the following creators and more:

Main Characters

• Gumball Watterson (voiced by Logan Grove): A twelve year old cat with an epic flair for misadventure. No matter how badly his plans go, his unbounded optimism prevents him from learning any lessons. He attends Elmore Junior High and has a crush on Penny, the antlered peanut.
• Darwin Watterson (voiced by Kwesi Boakye): Formerly Gumball's pet fish, he grew legs one day and became fast friends with Gumball. He subsequently became a member of the family. Due to his sudden introduction into the world, his world view is somewhat skewed and he tends to be more naive than other characters. He attends Elmore Junior High alongside Gumball.
• Anais Watterson (voiced by Kyla Rae Kowalewski): A prodigy at only four years old, she is a rabbit who is considered to be the youngest and smartest character on the show, often being called a genius and attending school with her much older brother. Gumball resents the fact that she is always telling him what to do, but deep down, he knows that she is usually right.
• Nicole Watterson (voiced by Teresa Gallagher): A working mother who works long hours at the rainbow factory, she is the only responsible member of the family. She has a short temper and can get quite angry, and is also competitive by nature.
• Richard Watterson (voiced by Dan Russell): A massive rabbit and a stay at home father, he doesn't appear to have any degree of responsibility. He usually just spends all of his time watching television and playing video games, occasionally not even bothering to get dressed. He has a large appetite and is a voracious eater.

Zombie Cheeseburgers in awesome 3D animated short film

They're coming to get you! All this time, your lunch has been harboring deep-seeded hatred towards mankind. Now it's their turn to feast on your flesh! Behold, Hambuster, a tastey 6-minute animated short film in stereoscopic 3D by five disturbed (yet highly creative) grad students: Paul Alexandre, Dara Cazamea, Maxime Cazaux, Romain Delaunay and Bruno Ortolland from Supinfocom Arles, the French computer design school. Their film won the prestigious 2011 Imagina Award for Best Student Project and you can see for yourself that it certainly deserves it. Hambuster is a glorious spoof on all our favorite sci-fi films such as Zombieland and Attack of the Killer Tomatoes. Beware of the next cheeseburger you have for lunch. It just might have other ideas...
