Tenchi Muyo!War on Geminar
Kenshi Masaki is a 15-year-old boy that has unwillingly traveled from his home on Earth to the alternate world of Geminar (ジェミナー, Jeminā). On Geminar, the countries wage wars using Sacred Mechanoids, humanoid exoskeletal weapons that were originally discovered within ancient ruins and developed over centuries. After being tricked by a mysterious organization into participating in an attempt to assassinate Lashara Earth XXVIII, the young ruler of the Shtrayu Empire, he ends up captured after he chooses not to kill her. Deducing enough about Kenshi to interest her and because his abilities make him an extremely valuable property, Lashara decides to take Kenshi under her protection.
Disguised as her attendant, Kenshi travels with her and her bodyguard Chiaia Flann to the Holy Land, a virtually impregnable fortress that serves as an academy to train Sacred Mechanoid pilots, most of whom are female. With his kindness, tenacity, and skills that vary from carpentry and cooking to advanced survival techniques, Kenshi eventually becomes a celebrity in the academy, becoming the object of affection of many female students and making some of the male students envious. In 2014, aliens suddenly appear on earth and propose to trade consciousness-controlled multi-purpose robot ""EXOFRAMES"" for a small price. The outstanding versatility and exceedingly low cost of the alien technology is immediately put to use in industries and battlefields across the globe. Beyond pre-existing weapons, even the existing social order seemingly become obsolete.
[Source: Comicon.com] Novelist and screenwriter Gen Urobuchi has become something of a legend in anime circles. Though he is respected for the excellent character development in each of his shows, he is specifically known for the dark themes and often violent series he’s created. Series like Fate/Zero, Psycho-Pass, and Madoka Magica have cemented this reputation; proving he can bring his brand of storytelling to any genre. And it seems like next for him is a return to the world of mecha anime with YouTube Original, Obsolete.
Obsolete is set in an alternate history where aliens came to Earth in 2014, offering to give us a special technology known as “exo-frames” — robots controlled by a user’s consciousness. Both easier to pilot and cheaper than jets or tanks, these “exo-frames” quickly change the face of combat.
The series is directed by Hiroki Yamada and Seiichi Shirato, with mecha designs from Makoto Ishiwata (Gargantia, Robotics;Notes). Character designs were handled by Akihiko Yoshida (SayoAsa) and Yuya Nagai. BUEMON is the studio responsible for bringing the 3D series to life.
Obsolete premiered December 3rd on YouTube. The series being available in its entirety for YouTube Premium users, while free users will be able to watch new episodes once a week.
[Source: Animation Magazine] An animated series produced by Irish studio Giant Animation will be spearheading YouTube’s changing approach to its YouTube Originals content when it is made available for free to all viewers this February.
Sherwoodis a 10-episode animated series inspired by the legend of Robin Hood and set in a dystopian future where Earth has been destroyed by climate change and is ruled by the evil sheriff of Sherwood. In this modern retelling, Robin is a 14-year-old girl who uses technology and code to hack and do battle with the sheriff.
“A key focus of the show is trying to inspire young women and girls to be more interested in technology and to know that they can have an impact on the future of technology. We were very pleased to partner with YouTube to produce Sherwood, which is their first original animated series,” said Alex Sherwood, Creative Director & Co-Founder, Giant Animation.
“The response to Sherwood has been truly outstanding and we are thrilled that it already has over 20 million views. We are also delighted that it will be going free to all viewers in February so even more people will get a chance to watch it. More than 120 people worked on Sherwood at our Dublin office and it has a world-class cast, including The Witcher’s Anya Calotra.”
Sherwood was the first animated series commissioned for the YouTube Premium service, and other series include Cobra Kai, Impulse and Step Up: High Water. The first episode of Sherwood has over 20 million views.
YouTube is now changing its approach to its Premium service and is making all of its YouTube Originals series free to all viewers globally. This is a significant change from its plans to charge a monthly fee for access to the original content and could prove to be a major headache for Netflix, Amazon Prime, and Disney. In September 2019, YouTube also announced a major $100 million investment in original children’s content.
Sherwood was co-produced by Baby Octopus in New York and Toybox in Auckland, New Zealand. In the last 15 years, the number of animation studios in Ireland has risen from six to over 30. An estimated 1,500 people work in the sector, which generates around €200 million for the Irish economy annually.
