The Epic Battle Between Ninja and Samurai...

SHOGUN'S NINJA
Set in 17th-century Edo, an era of unprecedented peace under the rule of Shogun Ieyasu Tokugawa, samurai govern the land. However, beneath this tranquility, a gripping tale of revenge and survival unfolds.

Kagaribi and Okyo, descendants of the once-legendary FUMA ninja clan, are determined to restore their family’s lost honor. Struggling to survive, they take on various tasks for the townspeople, barely getting by, while clinging to the hope of reviving their clan’s former glory. Their peaceful lives are shattered when their friend, Oran, is kidnapped by the formidable YAGYU clan, the Shogun’s elite samurai force. At the same time, the Shogun, disillusioned with his own belief, plots to betray the very Shogunate he commands.

Caught in the heart of a deadly conspiracy that threatens the Shogunate’s survival, Kagaribi and Okyo must take up arms to rescue the Shogun, standing firm as the Shogunate’s unyielding protectors against the advancing YAGYU clan. As they uncover long-buried secrets about the fall of the ‘Fuma’ clan, they are thrust into a battle that will determine not only their family’s fate but the future of the Shogunate itself.

Now, the legendary FUMA NINJAS face off against the indomitable YAGYU SAMURAI in an epic clash of honor, duty, and destiny-one that will decide the fate of the Shogunate.

Trailer for Luc Besson's "Enter the Warriors Gate"

ENTER THE WARRIORS GATE
[Source: blastr] While we wait with bated breath for Luc Besson’s new space opera opus Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets to swoosh into movie theaters in July, a fantasy-adventure film Besson co-wrote with Robert Mark Kamen (Taken, the Transporter movie franchises) titled Enter the Warriors Gate will arrive next month.

First released in China late last year, Warriors Gate will premiere in U.S. movie theaters and On Demand on May 5. Directed by Matthias Hoene (Cockneys vs Zombies), the movie stars Guardians of the Galaxy’s Dave Bautista, Uriah Shelton, Mark Chao, Ni Ni, Francis Ng and Sienna Guillory. So, what’s the movie about? Here’s a synopsis:

Epic fantasy-adventure meets martial arts action in this thrilling film written by Luc Besson & Robert Mark Kamen. After a mysterious chest opens a gateway through time, teen gamer Jack (Uriah Shelton) is transported to an ancient empire terrorized by a cruel barbarian king (former WWE superstar Dave Bautista). Jack will need all of his gaming skills as he battles to defeat the barbarian, protect a beautiful princess, and somehow find his way back home.

Yeah, it’s pretty similar to 2008’s The Forbidden Kingdom, which starred Jet Li and Jackie Chan, albeit with a video game twist. The film followed an American teenager who is a massive fan of kung fu and Hong Kong cinema and travels back in time to China after discovering a magical stick weapon. There he joins a group of martial arts warriors to free the Monkey King from imprisonment.

From the look of the trailer, Enter the Warriors Gate could be a lot of harmless cheesy fun (focus on the word cheesy), too. Check it out, and let us know what you think! Will you enter the Warriors Gate?

Ninja Kids

Ninja Kids!
  • By Director Takashi Miike. Based on an immensely popular kids anime Rantaro the Ninja Boy, Ninja Kids is like a cross between Naruto and Harry Potter with a dash of Miike madness. Featuring an all star cast of veterans, Miike players, and a bus-load of incredible kids, the film is an odd gem of whacky absurd scenarios. The story centers on young Rantaro, played with quirky charm by Seishiro Kato, an aspiring ninja from a lower class ninja family who embarks during the opening credits to his first day of class as a first grade ninja. Training in ninja school includes such essential skills as ninja throwing, digging booby traps and ambushing your targets. As Rantaro navigates his way to the top of his class, he encounters a circus of colorful characters, each more absurd than the next. From a pair of ninjas who are masters at cutting people's hair to a villainous evil master whose head is so large he has trouble standing up. The story is less one coherent plot than a series of hijinks stitched together from episodes of the TV show but it works perfectly to showcase a school year of adventures. Miike definitely relies heavily on the source material, accentuating characters with facial prosthetics to enhance the live action cartoonish absurdity. The humor is definitely low grade, bathroom jokes mixed with extreme acts of hyper real violence that strangely enough feel appropriate for the genre. The heart of the film is in the right place, making kids confident in their abilities to succeed but Miike sometimes stumbles with the pacing of unraveling a large tapestry of elements. Still, there are some highly entertaining, well crafted scenes that have a great sense of atmosphere which keeps Ninja Kids from ever feeling dull. It's also great to see Miike have fun with a large budget that elevates the costume design, art direction, and the use of funny special effects, despite their cheesy quality, are well sustained throughout. Ninja Kids is an example of a Japanese mainstream product under the unique direction of one of the country's most peculiar cinematic export. If you enjoyed the Harry Potter movies but wanted to see something a bit more extreme and surreal, then this film will certainly deliver the goods. Takashi Miike, who continues to experiment in every genre imaginable, is in top form and seems re-invigorated with this film and his recent successes.
