25th Anniversary of Tim Burton's BATMAN

The film that changed comic-book
movies... and Hollywood forever
[Source: blastr.com] Today (June 23) is the 25th anniversary of the release of Batman, the 1989 film directed by Tim Burton that arguably paved the way for the modern era of comic-book movies. Starring Michael Keaton (Batman/Bruce Wayne), Jack Nicholson (the Joker), Kim Basinger (Vicki Vale), Michael Gough (Alfred) and Pat Hingle (Commissioner Gordon), the movie was a blockbuster success that changed the way both Hollywood and the general public viewed superheroes and movies based on their comic-book exploits.

Batman was the first movie to be based on a popular comic-book superhero since the Superman series petered out in 1987 with the all-but-unwatchable Superman IV: The Quest for Peace, and the first to become a monster hit since the first two entries in that series, Superman (1978) and Superman II (1981). But whereas even those two films tended to veer a little more toward camp -- a hangover from the days of the Batman TV series that ran for three years on ABC -- Burton's Batman was the first film to take its hero seriously and attempt to portray his twisted, obsessive psychology. It also presented the Caped Crusader's iconic nemesis, the Joker, as something deadlier than a buffoon, and made Gotham City itself into a character of sorts.

Batman was far from a perfect film -- it has major script problems, for one thing -- but its effect on Hollywood and the way that movies based on comic books were made was profound. Although it would take a decade-plus before those effects were fully felt -- with the arrival of films like X-Men (2000) and Spider-Man (2002) -- Batman was a turning point in many ways. Here are 10 of them (complete with memorable lines from the film) ...

1. "My life is really...complex.": Until Batman came along, the general public mainly knew the character through the campy version essayed by Adam West in ill-fitting tights on the 1966 Batman TV series. In the intervening years, the character had become progressively darker in the comics, culminating in the double whammy of Frank Miller's gritty, dystopian The Dark Knight Returns (1986) and Alan Moore's disturbing The Killing Joke (1988). The 1989 movie took its cue from those books and others, dropping the juvenile attitude and turning the Caped Crusader into the noirish figure that's been the template for the character on screen ever since.

2. "Money, money, money.": Although the first couple Superman movies starring Christopher Reeve had done well at the box office a decade earlier, Hollywood didn't believe that superhero comic books were a lucrative enough genre to mine. Batman showed how wrong they were, setting an opening weekend record with a three-day haul of more thn $43 million and becoming the first movie to reach $100 million at the box office in 10 days. It ended up with a worldwide box office total of $411 million -- the highest grossing film based on a DC comic book property until, appropriately enough, 2008's The Dark Knight.

3."I'm Batman.": The announcement that Michael Keaton had won the coveted dual role of Bruce Wayne and Batman was greeted with shock and skepticism among fans. After all, Keaton was primarily known for his comedic roles, leading many to believe that Burton would pursue a humorous vision similar to the TV series. But the director's hunch on his star was correct, as Keaton delivered a brooding, tortured performance worthy of the role. Casting against expectations continues to this day, with sterling examples such as Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark and Heath Ledger as the Joker.

4. "I make art until someone dies.": Just as the casting of Michael Keaton proved controversial, so did the hiring of Tim Burton to direct. With just two quirky comedies under his belt, Burton hardly seemed like the right person to bring a massive superhero tentpole to the screen. But his vision was one of the keys to Batman's success and put a format into place that many comic book movies have followed since. He was also the first in a long line of unusual directing choices, ranging from Jon Favreau (Iron Man) to the Russo Brothers (Captain America: The Winter Soldier).

5. "Wait 'til they get a load of me.": Jack Nicholson may have earned top billing in Batman thanks to his iconic Hollywood status, but his portrayal of the Joker also dominated the film. Over the top, chewing scenery like Godzilla rampaging through downtown Tokyo, killing people at random and hysterically laughing through it all, Nicholson set the gold standard for almost all future film supervillains, including Heath Ledger's own demonic take on the same character 19 years later. From Jim Carrey's Riddler to Willem Dafoe's Green Goblin to Michael Shannon's General Zod, the bad guys of the superhero movie genre all owe something to Jack.

6. "I made you, you made me first.": Did you know that the Joker, when he was known as thug Jack Napier, killed Bruce Wayne's parents and sowed the seeds of the Batman? Neither did we. Batman played things a little fast and loose with both the Caped Crusader's origin story and that of his arch-enemy -- and while diehard fans bristled at the retcon, it didn't seem to hurt the box office one bit. Batman showed that filmmakers could take liberties with the source material and get away with it, and while it's a bit more difficult to do that in the age of the Internet and instant fan protests, it still happens on a regular basis (see the entire X-Men franchise).

7. "Gotham City. Always brings a smile to my face.": When Superman was released in 1978, it was clear for all to see that Metropolis was nothing more than a barely disguised New York City. Burton and the late, brilliant production designer Anton Furst took things in the other direction with Batman, creating a wholly fictional, heavily stylized Gotham City that brooded over its inhabitants like a living, breathing, crouching colossus. The city as a character -- real or otherwise -- has been part of the superhero genre ever since.

8. "Where does he get those wonderful toys?": The arrival of Batman launched a marketing and merchandising blitz not seen since the peak of Star Wars, which didn't even roll out its toys and such until months after the movie came out. But for months before the release of Batman, as "Batmania" swept the nation, the studio and its merchandising partners capitalized on that with an endless barrage of toys, action figures, costumes, games and other paraphernalia. Before all was said and done, some $750 million in Bat-junk was sold -- opening the floodgates for merchandizing blitzkriegs ever since.

9. "Have you shipped a million of those things?": Batman was released on home video (just quaint little VHS at that point) in November 1989 -- just five short months after it came out in theaters. This was virtually unheard of at the time, with most films on video going the rental route for months (if not a year) before showing up priced to buy. Wanting to sieze on the movie's momentum, however, Warner Bros. got it out on videocassette in time for Christmas. Although it was not the massive seller the studio expected, Batman changed the landscape irrevocably for movies making the jump from the big screen to the small one.

10. "It's not exactly a normal world, is it?": Batman didn't just make the superhero movie a lucrative option for Hollywood -- it was really the prototype for the pre-branded, pre-sold, pre-marketed modern blockbuster. Sure, Star Wars and Jaws created the "summer tentpole," but Batman was based on a pre-existing property -- and 25 years later, Hollywood is almost all about pre-existing properties. Rarely will a movie get the green light if it's not connected to a comic, a best seller, a TV show or an earlier film. The success of Batman also led to the acclaimed Batman: The Animated Series, which itself was the launching pad of the DC Animated Universe -- with the shared universe concept now consuming movie franchises at every turn. The world of film today may not be a normal one, but Batman played a major role in inventing it.

Today, We Honor Panem's District Heroes

DISTRICT 12
Lily Elsington, District 12

To our brothers and sisters of District 12 we say — bravo! Your honorable work ethic and perseverance has not gone unnoticed, and the Capitol appreciates your commitment to serving our great nation.

Now more than ever you must remember the importance of our system and the greater good it creates. Embrace the sweat on your brow and the sores on your fingers. Allow the soot to settle along your feet. You are the light that shines in the coal mines you venture. Take pride in your scars of labor, for they are labors of love for your country.

No citizen is too young to support the constructive efforts of the Mining District, and in turn, the gallant efforts of Panem. Look to Lily Elsington as a shining example in this inspiring piece provided to you by the Capitol Ministry of Information.

Age of Ultron Set Footage

[Source: blastr.com] Some new set footage from Avengers: Age of Ultron has leaked out, showing what looks to be a full scene between Captain America (Chris Evans) and Thor (Chris Hemsworth) — plus a fresh crop of trainees?

The scene appears to show Thor and Cap walking and talking, until Thor lifts Mjolnir in the sky and summons up some lightning — or at least summons up some flashy lights. We’d think the lightning will actually be added in post-production for safety reasons.

There’s also another interesting tidbit via the team of soldiers doing training in the background of the scene, which could certainly be one of the first post-Winter Soldier squads to join Earth's Mightiest Heroes in their quest for good. But are these guys the new-look S.H.I.E.L.D. or something else entirely via Stark Industries (i.e. that rumored Avengers academy?)

Aquaman Joins Batman V. Superman

Aquaman will be played by Jason Mamoa, who will have a part in the upcoming Batman V. Superman from director Zack Snyder.

This has been rumored for a while, and Aquaman is gonna be pretty damn angry. He isn't too pleased about the effects the World Engine in Man of Steel had on the oceans and it is guessed that he might have a little beef with Superman for attracting it to Earth in the first place.
Jason Mamoa is Aquaman!

E3 2014: ‘Star Wars: Battlefront 3′

New Star Wars Battlefront
[Source: L.A.Times] A new trailer for the long anticipated “Star Wars: Battlefront 3″ finally arrived Monday during a video presentation during Electronic Arts’ Electronic Entertainment Expo news conference held at the Shrine Auditorium & Expo Hall in Los Angeles.

The video (see above) features an inside look detailing the effort put forth by programmers and artists from Stockholm-based game developer DICE in crafting the latest big-budget “Star Wars” game.

The EA-backed crew traveled to the Lucas Cultural Arts Museum to get an up-close look at the props used in the movies — including speeder bikes and blasters, as well as R2-D2.

They then headed to the original movie locations to, as DICE’s Niklas Fegraeus states in the voice-over, “not just capture the environments, but the emotions they evoke as well.”

The trailer shows little in the way of actual gameplay, relying heavily on John Williams’ evocative “Star Wars” score and many well-placed shots of different landscapes and vehicles, before culminating in a quick action sequence on what looks to be Endor in the middle of a laser fight on speeder bikes through the forest.

E3 2014: Nintendo Panel
[Source: dvice.com] Unlike Microsoft and Sony, Nintendo, the company that gave us Mario, Zelda and Pokémon didn't put on an elaborate E3 2014 press conference. In fact, the company hasn't done one since 2012. Instead, Nintendo chose to deliver its new announcements via a "Digital Event" streamed live on the Internet.

While Nintendo used the 47-minute video stream to showcase key games Nintendo has in store for Wii U and 3DS, it also unleashed a ton of trailers on other new titles including Mario Party 10 and Mario vs. Donkey Kong.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U / 3DS

Everyone's favorite Nintendo brawler is coming out later this year on the Wii U (holiday) and 3DS (October 3). In addition to the myriad of fighters that Nintendo has been teasing over the last year, you'll be able to create your own Miis and use them to fight in the game — a first for the series.

Nintendo says it toyed with the idea of using Miis in Super Smash Bros. Brawl for Wii, but decided against it after they felt it was weird using the friendly Miis to battle each other.

I guess the company had a change of heart because there will be three types of Mii characters: Brawlers, Sword Fighter, Gunners. In total, Mii characters will have 36 special moves. Impressive. Kid Icarus' Lady Palutena will also be a playable character.
The adapter (above) that lets you use GameCube controllers in Super Smash Bros. Wii U will also be available for $20 later this year. If you want just the Smash-emblazoned GameCube controller, it'll cost $30. And if you want a bundle that includes a copy of the game, the controller and the adapter, it'll run you $100. BTW, the adapter works with Wavebird controllers, if you still have those lying around somewhere.

Amiibo

Skylanders proved toys and video games could be successfully combined. Nintendo's now getting in on the NFC figurine action with its own Nintendo character figs called "amiibo". When the figurine toys are tapped to the Wii U GamePad, data can be sent from the figs to the game, and vice versa. Figures will have their own unique stats that evolve the more you play with them n games.

Super Smash Bros. Wii U will be the first game to support Amiibo in which fighters will get their own attributes.

Nintendo says amiibo connectivity is being prepared for a number of Nintendo games, including the recently released Mario Kart 8.

Wii U

But let's stop beating around the bush. The Wii U is sinking fast, and it needs games to keep it afloat. While a new Mario platformer wasn't announced, Nintendo did show off some cool titles including the first look at the new Zelda which looks absolutely gorgeous.

E3 2014: Xbox One Revelations

The Future of XBox One
[Source: dvice.com] Microsoft's E3 2014 press conference was all about the games. Instead of harp on and on about the Xbox One's media and TV features, the company chose to spend its 90-minute E3 press conference showing game after game after game.

Tallying up the totals, there are 15 "core" Xbox One games coming out, as well as a huge list of games developed by indies. Next year's not looking too shabby either. Microsoft showed previews for six new games including a Crackdown reboot and a new Tomb Raider.

Harrison Ford injured while filming Star Wars VII

[Source: blastr.com] Filming on Star Wars: Episode VII will have to go on without Han Solo for a bit.

Disney announced Thursday that Harrison Ford, who's reprising his role as the legendary smuggler and pilot, injured his ankle while filming J.J. Abrams' much-anticipated continuation of the saga, and was taken to a local hospital. Disney did not give any details regarding how serious the ankle injury is, but a statement from the company did note that "shooting will continue as planned while he recuperates."

Disney also didn't reveal exactly what caused Ford's injury, but according to The Hollywood Reporter's sources, Ford was hurt "by the door of the Millennium Falcon," the iconic starship he piloted in the first three Star Wars films. That's still not very specific, and the ship certainly has more than one door, but you can bet Chewbacca's going to get an earful about this.

Jokes aside, though the injury doesn't seem like something too serious at the moment (that we know of), we wish Ford a speedy recovery.

Star Wars: Episode VII hits theaters December 18, 2015.

E3 2014: Sony Reveals Playstation Future

Credit: Raymond Wong/DVICE
E3: 2014 - SONY Panel
[Source: dvice.com] The success of the PlayStation 4 has put Sony back on top of the gaming leader board for the first time in eight years. Last year, Sony "won" E3 2013 by having a next to perfect press conference by focusing on what fans cared most about: gaming.

Having "lost" last year, Microsoft decided to focus its entire Xbox One E3 2014 press conference on gaming. I'm sure gamers appreciated Microsoft's emphasis on gaming, but Sony seriously had it all. Take a look for yourself.

White PS4 with Destiny Bundle

Sony kickstarted its E3 2014 press conference with new video gameplay for sci-fi shooter Destiny, but then it put up a slide for a white PlayStation 4 console bundle, with matching white DualShock 4, a copy of Destiny and a 30-day PlayStation Plus trial membership. The bundle will be available on September 9 for $449.

Upcoming PS4 Games

Destiny (Beta starts July 17)

LittleBigPlanet 3 (November 2014)

inFAMOUS First Light

Far Cry 4

The Order: 1886

Dead Island 2 (Spring 2015)

Battlefield Hardline

Magicka 2

Let it Die (2015, PS4 Exclusive)

No Man's Sky

Mortal Kombat X

The Last of Us Remastered (July 29)

Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain

Grand Theft Auto V (Fall)

Batman Arkham Knight (2015)

Uncharted 4: A Thief's End (2015)

YouTube Sharing

Sony says the DualShock 4's "Share" button has been used 220 million times. Who knew sharing gameplay videos would become so big. And later this year, it's going to get even better: uploading videos from the PS4 to YouTube is coming.

PlayStation Now Open Beta

PlayStation Now, Sony's streaming game service will arrive on July 31 as an open beta for everyone. FYI, it lets you play PS3 games by leveraging the power of the cloud. PlayStation Now for PS3 and PS Vita will come shortly after. Select Sony smart TVs will also be compatible.

PS Vita

The PlayStation 4 wasn't the only game console Sony announced new games for. The PS Vita also got some minor love. Sony says there are over 100 Vita titles in development including Minecraft (full console experience with co-op), Child of Light and Tales from the Borderlands.

PlayStation TV

Announced at Tokyo Game Show last year, the PS Vita TV is back and it's coming to the U.S. and Canada with a new name: PlayStation TV. The off-white finish is gone, replaced with a matte black look (to better match all of the other black-colored boxes under your TV, of course). Right off the bat, the PlayStation TV will have access to over 1,000 games at launch.

The little micro-console that plays PS Vita games with a DualShock 3 controller and works with the PlayStation Now game service will cost $99 when it launches this fall. A $139 bundle will come with a DualShock 3 controller, 8GB memory card, and voucher for a free copy of The LEGO Movie Game.
