Anime Expo Brings Japan Subculture to U.S. Fans

[Source: Stephanie Mendez/ABC News] The lobby in the Los Angeles Convention Center was a colorful scene Fourth of July weekend as characters like Zelda, Naruto, Super Mario, and many others came to life through cosplay, an activity that combines costuming and role-playing.

The 2013 Anime Expo celebrated a four-day residency at the LACC and featured the best of Japanese anime, manga, video games, films, shows, and fashion. The event was organized by the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation, and according to director of marketing Greg Hignight, over 130,000 people were expected to attend the expo over the entire weekend.

Hignight told ABCNews.com that Anime Expo aims to teach and foster interest in Japanese culture.

“We are a celebration of anime and we are a community that gets together around that, but we are also a platform for anyone who has ever wondered about Japan,” he said.

Cosplayers single-handedly dominated the weekend. Anime Expo guest of honor Alodia Gosiengfiao exhibited different costumes each day of the event. As an internationally known Filipina cosplayer, she takes this activity seriously.

“I really consider myself an artist,” she said. “I see cosplay as an art form. It’s the ultimate art form because instead of painting on a canvas, your body is the canvas.”

Each year, Anime Expo features the biggest event available for both fans and cosplayers: The Masquerade. The Masquerade is a contest that includes creative performances by competing cosplayers. Contestants can enter individually or in groups, and they are judged based on costume craftsmanship and performance.

Kyle Hebert, who recently did the voice of Ryu in Disney’s “Wreck-it Ralph,” cohosted The Masquerade alongside actress Marisha Ray. Hebert told ABCNews.com that he was excited to host the event, even though he had never tried cosplay before.

“You hear the woes of the fans as they take the masks off and they’re drenched in sweat,” he said. “I couldn’t do it, but God bless them.”

Group 30 Leathal Soul won “Best in Show,” which included a $3,000 prize.

According to Hebert, Anime Expo provides community for those who find fulfillment in unconventional things like anime, cosplay or video games.

“Everyone’s passionate about something,” he said. “Everyone’s a geek or a nerd about something. All the folks that tune in and watch sporting events, they’re geeky about sports. [Anime fans] just happen to be geeky about a foreign art form.”

        Laika's next stop-motion movie, BOXTROLLS

        9 . 26 . 14
        • The film, based on a 2005 book called Here Be Monsters!, has an impressive, mostly-British voice cast, including Ben Kingsley, Elle Fanning, Toni Collette, Jared Harris, Richard Ayoade, Tracy Morgan, Simon Pegg, and Nick Frost (one hopes the latter two are paired off again; I thought they were fairly killer in TINTIN, and I hear they do fun live-action stuff too). Bran Stark himself, Isaac Hempstead-Wright, will voice the lead role of Eggs.

‘Star Wars’ fan film to air as TV commercial

Don't argue with the boss when the boss is Darth Vader. Filmmakers Erik Beck, Justin Johnson, and team "The Indie Machines" show us why.

As part of the Pringles® and Star Wars® "The Force For Fun" promotion, more than a thousand fan-generated video ideas were gathered through Tongal.com and narrowed down to seven finalist videos competing for a grand prize of $25,000* and the chance to be featured as a national advertisement.

Visit www.Facebook.com/Pringles for news and updates, and join the conversation using #TheForceForFun in your other social spaces. Stay tuned to Pringles® YouTube and Facebook pages for the announcement of the winning video at the end of June.

          *Official Rules: http://tongal.com/about/official-rules

Be sure to check out exclusive behind-the-scenes content and interviews with the filmmakers and Lucasfilm representatives, available at these participating blogger sites:

[Source: Eric Pfeiffer, Yahoo! News]The "Star Wars" saga is so ingrained in our collective consciousness that even a potato chip container is enough to spawn some hilarious and impressive fan films.

A few months ago, Pringles potato chips and Lucasfilm asked fans to create an original short film set in the Star Wars universe using the snack food as a centerpiece.

“We looked for creativity that was rooted in a deep appreciation of the 'Star Wars' movies and the characters—references and details that could only come from a fan, and that could best be appreciated by other fans,” Lucasfilm’s Global Integrated Promotions Manager Kelli Martin told Yahoo News.

Now, many "Star Wars" fans will roll their eyes at the idea of using their beloved franchise to sell potato chips. And to be sure, the theme has been worn thin in recent years. Nearly everyone with an Internet connection has their own take—a Yoda pun here, a Darth Vader reference there. There’s so much "Star Wars" shoved in our faces these days that it’s hard for anything to feel fresh.

But the fans in this contest actually pulled it off. And part of the credit has to go to Lucasfilm, which selected the finalists that best represented "Star Wars."

The winning entry was “Jim vs. Vader,” which reimagined the "Star Wars" villain as an overbearing office manager. The video has received 150,000 page views since it was first posted in May, along with the other contest finalists.

“It's been a bit of a roller-coaster ride of emotions, and by mid-June we had convinced ourselves that we weren't going to win,” said Erik Beck, whose team Indie Machines, produced the winning video.

“We're also honored at how many people commented and shared the video,” Beck told Yahoo News. “No way we would have won without all their support.”

And as part of their prize for winning the contest, Beck and his team will have their video aired as a national commercial by Pringles this fall.

The other finalists included a video about a vengeful kid who had his Pringles stolen and a group of friends who methodically re-create the first "Star Wars" film using homemade props, including their potato chip container.

“Fan films have been part of the 'Star Wars' experience from the very start,” Martin told Yahoo. “Beginning most famously with ‘Hardware Wars’ in 1978, George Lucas set out to inspire young people to pursue their dreams with 'Star Wars,' and often that dream is to be a filmmaker.”

The other finalist videos can be seen here.
