Cosplay Photos from Anime Midwest 2018

ANIME MIDWEST
July 6-8, 2018
Anime Midwest took place this past weekend, July 6-8, 2018 in Chicago drawing an estimated 15,000 plus people to the Hyatt Regency O’Hare & Convention Center.

One of the great things about this con was the amount of cosplay going on. There was everything from the first time cosplayer in attendance to those who put a ton of time and money into their outfits. Every one of them were amazing for the enthusiasm they had for the characters they represented.

Here are some photos we took over the weekend.

Spider-Man co-creator Steve Ditko Dies

STEVE DITKO
(November 2, 1927 – c. June 29, 2018)
[Source: Syfy] Steve Ditko, the visionary comics artist and writer who co-created, with Stan Lee, the characters of Spider-Man and Doctor Strange, has reportedly died at the age of 90.

Reports of Ditko's death began surfacing Friday night (June 29) on social media, and now the New York Police Department confirms (per The Hollywood Reporter) that Ditko was found dead in his apartment that day, and that he was believed to have died two days prior (June 27). Ditko leaves behind no known survivors.

The extremely reclusive artist, who was still said to work in a midtown Manhattan studio as of 2016, did not give an interview or make a public appearance in more than five decades. His contributions to comics and pop culture, however, cannot be understated. Launching his career in 1953, Ditko got a job two years later at Marvel Comics precursor Atlas. In 1962, editor Stan Lee began developing a teen superhero and, after initially working with Jack Kirby, turned to Ditko.

Spider-Man debuted in Amazing Fantasy #15 (August 1962), with Lee and Ditko's initial 38-issue run setting Peter Parker on the path to become one of the world's three most popular superheroes (alongside Batman and Superman). A year later, in Strange Tales #110 (July 1963), they introduced Doctor Strange, the master of the mystic arts.

Ditko continued to work at Marvel, DC, Charlton, and other publishers before leaving mainstream comics in 1998, creating or co-creating characters like Squirrel Girl, the Question, the Creeper, and many more. While remaining on the fringes of the industry until his passing, Ditko and his sumptuous, instantly recognizable artwork influenced it in ways that will never be forgotten.

A Live-Action Gundam Movie is Coming!

Mobile Suit Gundam
One of the most influential giant robot sagas of all time, is heading to the big screen.
[Source: io9] Legendary has just announced a new collaboration with Sunrise at Anime Expo 2018 that will see Gundam get its first ever live-action movie. Details are scarce and a provided press release by the studio stresses no story details are being revealed right now. However, it does include a brief synopsis for the premise of the original beloved anime series and its setting in the “Universal Century,” the main timeline that many of the dozens of Gundam anime, mangas, and video games have been set in:
The original Gundam series is set in the Universal Century, an era in which humanity’s growing population has led people to emigrate to space colonies. Eventually, the people living in the colonies seek their autonomy, and launch a war of independence against the people living on Earth. Through the tragedies and discord arising from this human conflict, not only the maturation of the main character, but also the intentions of enemies and the surrounding people are sensitively depicted.
It technically won’t be Gundam’s first foray in Hollywood—there’s long been attempts to bring the franchise to the big screen before, and technically the RX-78-2, the first and perhaps most recognizable Gundam mecha, made its big screen debut in Ready Player One this year. But it’s a big step for a beloved series like this—and given Legendary has already had success with giant robot movies in the form of Pacific Rim and its sequel, it’s got the experience needed to bring the most beloved giant robots of all to the big screen.

Toys "R" Us closes its doors

Today is the Last Day of Toys R Us
With Toys “R” Us officially going out of business, a picture of the iconic toystore’s mascot bidding children and adults all over the nation goodbye is ringing waves of sadness throughout the internet.

Captured by an employee earlier this week, Geoffrey the Giraffe is seen standing in an empty aisle with a suitcase in hand preparing to leave for a “very long vacation.” Shared over 300,000 thousand times, the photo along with an official statement from Toys “R” Us marks the very end of the go-to location for kids to get the newest toys that opened its doors 70 years ago. Earlier this year Toys “R” Us filed for bankruptcy and despite valiant efforts, the company revealed that it would be closing all of its North American outlets at the end of June.
So long Old Friend...
Hope We Meet Again Someday

Batman Dance Party

Batman Dance-Off and Other Disturbing Bat Secrets
[Source: i09] You can sit here all you want and tell me that the Adam West-era Batman theme song isn’t fantastic, but you’d be lying. Lying, I say. The very good people at Monster Truck Ninja know this to be true, and have given all of Gotham’s best (and worst) the chance to boogie to the iconic music in an excellent CG video that encapsulates what makes classic stop-motion animation so great.

Skull & Bones
Take a look at the official E3 2018 trailer for Skull & Bones shown during the Ubisoft Press Conference. For release on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in 2019. The game revolves around piracy and naval warfare.

Skull & Bones is set in an open world environment and played from a third-person perspective. Wind positioning can be assessed to gain an advantage in battle. Players may collect additional ships throughout the game, such as sloops-of-war, frigates and brigantines, whose weapons include mortars, broadside cannons, and rockets. Ships can be charged into with brute force and boarded. The rate of inflicted damage is gauged by the health bar. A core component is the multiplayer mode Loot Hunt, where two groups of players are challenged in treasure hunting to further accumulate their riches.
